Well it's Friday market show and tell, but this week I have only been able to do bisque firings, as my elements need replacing and I'm waiting on them to arrive from the mainland. I have heaps and heaps of new work and samples waiting to go into the kiln, but they will have to wait.

But I have made some new drop earrings to match the necklace, as the other pair sold very quickly. I am working on a new line of jewellery with these earrings in mind, as they are really lovely

This year is an exciting time for magoolie designs. There will be a make-over of all the existing presentation tags. New ideas and new pieces will also be making their way onto the stands. This week I have been working on some new fresh designs for the label. Rather than release them all at once, I have enough ideas for the whole year!!! I just hope that they all turn out.

Sometimes I have an idea, and I make the sample and once it comes out of the kiln it doesn't quite look right, or hang right, or sit right..... so back to the drawing board. Sometimes it can take a few weeks for a new item to be realised, and sometimes a few months worth of tweaking is involved. Sometimes it doesn't even make it into the range at all. After I have made my samples I always try them out at local markets first to guage interest and get feedback. If everything turns out well....then it's off to make some more and contact my wholesalers to tell them the good news.

This weeks new item is an ice cream scoop

Made in Southern Ice Porcelain it is really smooth and keeps cool, so makes scooping a breeze

I've only made 2 so far, and 1 I have kept for myself (which is very unusual, as I mostly sell all my products and just keep the samples or seconds).... anyway if it gets a good response at Salamanca I will make some more

I'd like to make some bowls to match the next one, or pop some lustre writing on the scoop

Maybe something fun like "we all scream for ice cream"

A Great Market Day

I was tired today... but once I had set up and the customers started arriving it's hard to focus on yourself. I really enjoyed Salamanca Market today.

After I set up I purchased some plants for the garden. Then did a quick round of the stalls - spotted Katie from 'what katie did next' and also Narelle from 'Ruby Victoria Letterpress' - these are all other fellow Tasmanian's that design and make all their own wares.

Around 9.00am I headed off quickly to the Lamb spot (sorry don't know what it is called - but they do fantastic food) and ordered a Lamb wrap - they also do a divine egg, bacon, mushroom, tomato roll for breakfast .... so yummy!!!!

I had a great day sales wise - as well as my usual jewellery sales I sold my new set of heart mugs to a lovely couple, and a few more girl mugs, some coasters, a few mini condiment/salt&pepper pots and lots of bits and pieces.

It's so nice to know that people do appreciate handcrafted items.

At the end of the day I headed off to another stallholder (sorry, also do not know what they are called - but I will find out) and bought some brownie/fudge - which I call 'fownie' and some other delightful mini desserts to take to my Mum's house, as I'm heading over there to stay the night and have dinner - along with my 3 boys, as my husband is away.

It's going to be 30 degrees tomorrow, so as Mum lives at the beach I will spend the day relaxing there - swimming, having a BBQ and drinking champagne....

I have been making some French Bistro pieces this week.

The French Bistro pieces were my first ever line I slipcast many years ago.

The new pieces are a little different, the edges are not as perfect, this time I have decided to leave the edges a little uneven for a more rustic finish.

The first batch of ice cream bowls I got out of the kiln had a bluer glaze on the outside, so after some adjustments to my glaze mix, the second batch has the more speckled rusty glaze that defines this range. I will be making some more over the next few weeks.

This week I have some glace bowls, some soupe bowls, and a chocolat and cafe mug.

This week I have 2 new pieces to show you, as I couldn't decide which ones to show.

Please excuse the bad photography and background - I was in a bit of a rush.

First of all I have made these lovely little spoons. They are just divine, and I think I'll make some little bowls to match. I will sell them as a set or separately.

Next I have this gorgeous necklace in Southern Ice Porcelain and Sterling Silver. I handrolled all the individual beads for this piece, then decorated them in tiny little blue spots, before firing.

There are matching little earrings to go with them - normally I'm not too much of a 'matchy matchy' person, but I do like these 2 pieces together. I really love this piece, and think I'll make another one next week for myself.

Cleaning your porcelain

As most of my pieces are unglazed porcelain, they can tend to get a little marked over time.

The best way to clean your porcelain pieces is with a little bit of cream cleanser, such as Jiff.

If your piece has embossing or impressions, you can get into the nooks with an old toothbrush.

Just clean with a little bit of Jiff and rinse under water.

It's as easy as that......

Every Friday I am hoping to give a sneak peek of new pieces that I will have at Salamanca Market on Saturday.

The piece that I have been working on this week is a stacking set consisting of a sugar or sweet bowl and 2 mugs. It is a dress with gold lustre detail on a platinum lustred clothes hanger. I am really happy with this new design and will be developing a range of stacking pieces for up and coming Markets.

Well.... the patchwork bowls that I was working on didn't turn out as well as I would have liked, so they are now going into my cupboard, along with all the other seconds.

I also have not had time to make any more 'girl mugs', as I have been spending the last few days in Bicheno with my family, enjoying the beautiful weather... we have taken the Kombi away camping.

But on a good note.... I made some necklaces that I am really happy with. They are in Southern Ice Porcelain and on a Sterling Silver Chain. I will take them along to Salamanca tomorrow and see how they go. Also I hope to have some more 'girl mugs' next week.

Lots of lovely comments and lots of people buying. I have now sold all of my Girl Mugs, so will have to start making some more. I will hopefully have new work each week. This week I am aiming to have some patchwork bowls completed in time for Saturday, along with some lovely new necklaces that are currently in the kiln being fired.

As promised here is the mug that Henry (4 years) made....

I put the skirt on, as well as the platinum lustre detail, but Henry did the legs all by himself.

He normally draws stick people with stick legs, but wanted some spots and stripes on her legs, so he made them thicker. Not bad for a first try.

He even signed the mug, and put his surname on the bottom - just like Mummy does

Well... my exhibition has opened!!

I forgot to take my camera to the opening night, but needless to say there was champagne, macarons and lots of chatter. I sold quite a few items, so am very happy.

The "girl mugs" have been a popular surprise, so I am taking extra orders for these.

They will all be unique and different, and each mug will be numbered.

The photo of the exhibition isn't that good, but it was the best I could do with the light.

Well... the 4 days are now over. This year the weather was terrific, and so was the turn-out.

My lovely Mum drove me up and back to the Tasmanian Craft Fair and stayed with me, as I still can't drive. I was situated in the main hall this year, and the venue was much better suited to my products and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Lot's of people said such lovely comments about the set-up of my site, and I was also interviewed for WIN TV news, which was good.

I especially liked the way the old vintage Stag Horns were displayed - they were used to hang my necklaces.

"A Celebration Of Christmas" exhibition

Next up is The Apron Design Market - I just have to find someone to drive me there & back!!

A BIG SORRY to all my customers who came to see me at the Boutique Market in Melbourne on Sunday... I arrived in Melbourne on Saturday, but was struck by a tram on my way back to my hotel for dinner. Unfortunately this left me in hospital with concussion for a few days...

I am back home now, and hopefully within the next few weeks will be totally back to normal.

In the meantime I am slowly getting organised for Deloraine, but will have to get someone else to drive me there and back until my dizziness has completely gone.

I love smooth organic shapes, and I also love geometric hard lines. So, as I couldn't decide on my next range, I decided to make 2 new ranges instead. The coastal collection is inspired by pebbles, and blue and white crockery washed up on Tasmanian beaches. The facet range is inspired by gems cut into facets to reveal their beauty. I only have the necklaces completed in each range, but will soon be adding earrings, rings and brooches to match. The necklaces are on an adjustable cord necklace, so can be worn short or long. As per usual I will be trialling them at my up and coming markets. So hope to see you there!!!

Parker Update

Anyone who reads my blog would know that we are Puppy Raising a Guide Dog called Parker.

Parker just loves the beach, especially when he gets let off his lead to play with all the other dogs. Here is a photo of him at Seven Mile Beach, and also one of him trying to see what I'm doing in the Laundry (where his food is!!) He did persevere unsuccessfully to get through the cat flap to his food for at least a week.

But did you know that it costs approx $30,000 to raise a Guide Dog...

Even though the Puppy Raisers are volunteers, there are still costs like Vet bills, Toys, Training, Coats, Leads, Food etc... that need to be paid for.

Even though the rain came down and the wind blew on Friday Evening, it was amazing the amount of shoopers that turned up.

Saturday saw the sun shine and it was a beautiful Autumn Day. More shoppers were out and about and it was lovely to meet some new customers and also see some regulars. I even saw a few with some of my hoop earrings on that they had previously bought. Of course when I mentioned that you can now buy extra "swip 'n' swap" pieces they all jumped at the chance.

Some shoppers even came on both the Friday Evening and also on Saturday.

I took my little bitty camera to take some snaps, but forgot to check the batteries, so didn't get any shots of my stall, but I have popped some photos of some of the new 'Coastal Collection' pieces that I took along.

Today I spent the morning having a sleep-in, and the afternoon putting up a pergola around my studio, and planting some Chinese Star Jasmine around the posts.

Hopefully the jasmine will cover my dodgy building skills.

Now all I have to do is wait for it all to grow, so that when I walk into the Studio I can capture the beautiful aroma of the jasmine.

Today I am heading to the Apron Design Market in Launceston, it is held over Friday Evening/Saturday morning. I am counting my lucky stars that even though it is going to be cold (max 15) at least it is not going to be raining... The good thing is that I can wear my lovely little crop cardi that I brought from Ella Sanders at the Sydney Trade Fair - it is pale grey with a silver fleck.

I have a Market on Friday/Saturday in Launceston -Apron Design at Seaport, and as I have been very busy completing orders and walking the dog, looking after 3 kids etc.. I haven't had a chance to really prepare

So today I am

Packaging and mailing off 7 orders to new stockists, putting my pieces onto mini cards for the Market, looking after my 3 year old, completing a Lustre Firing, starting a Porcelain Firing, picking up kids from school, going to a Gallery Meeting, starting my 'to do' list for tomorrow.... Not to mention making lunches, ironing, washing etc...

So I have included this image of a nice relaxing spot

I am FLAT OUT...

finishing of Trade Fair Orders,

My house is a mess and the garden is overgrown

I really like it when my house is clean & tidy but I hate cleaning & tidying

I do enjoy gardening, but at the moment it is quite overwhelming, as we have a very large yard

My Trade Fair orders are coming along nicely though

and deliveries will ready to send soon

When we moved into our property 10 years ago there was a little shed out the back

We are not sure what the original function was, but it had dado on the walls, and lovely little wooden windows that opened out

Somewhere along the way a garage door was installed and it became a "shed"

I really liked the idea of bringing the building back to life, but instead it got filled with junk and bits and bobs and just sat there, unloved and neglected

Finally.... after years of waiting she slowly came back to life...

My Dad helped me with all the renovations

First we built on a bathroom, with tongue n groove walls to match the dado

Removed the garage roller door and added a large sliding door into the garden

Then off to IKEA for a cheap but simple freestanding kitchen unit

& installed a microwave/convection oven

After being stripped (the original walls were a horsehair plaster that had badly cracked over time)

We insulated and sanded and painted

I kept the floor concrete, and painted in a concrete paint, as I didn't want the expense of new flooring

The lights are Vintage Chinese lanterns that I had converted into overhead lights

Here she is so far... set up for an overnight guest to sleep on a futon bed

Eventually I will change the lounge over to a more convenient sofa bed and pop some interesting pieces on the walls. It lacks artwork, rugs, books etc.. but they will be added over time

The bathroom looks out onto a private 'buddha fernery' which I have only recently planted, so it will be interesting to see it when it is fully grown

As we live quite close to the beach I have kept the design simple with coastal colours

How are my jewellery pieces made?

Well.. first I roll out the porcelain to the desired thickness

A lot of people use a large manual roller for this, but I prefer to roll the porcelain by hand with an old marble rolling pin

Then I cut the shapes out

Next I leave the shapes to dry - about a day

After this I sponge the edges, tops and bottoms

Next I decorate with a ceramic transfer paper, and then pop into the kiln

The kiln is set to slowly heat up to 1300 C

It takes a long time to cool down from this temperature too, so the pieces are in the kiln for quite a while

The final step is attaching the jewellery findings and putting them onto the mini cards ready to sell

Little Lamb Designs which makes lovely sterling silver jewellery

Caitlin attends lots of Markets in Victoria and will now be representing

magoolie designs at these Markets.

The next one up is Magnolia Square

This Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday at St Kilda Hall

So pop in and say "Hello" to Caitlin

Look at how big Parker has grown!!

He is now 16 weeks old, and is growing into his skin and big feet.

We have had to put him into the next size coat for his Guide Dog Training, as the other one is now too small.

Post Industrial Design contacted me before the Trade Fair to place an order, as they weren't going to be able to make it to Sydney....

They are now stocking some of my lovely pieces.

The good thing was that they did manage to make the Trade Fair after all, so it was so nice to be able to meet them in person.

Watermelon Bowl by Samantha Robinson

What a great time I had at First InStyle.

I met some wonderful people, saw some inspirational products & came home exhausted but also full of energy.

I took some orders from a fantastic selection of stores around the Country, so will be in the studio working hard to fill these.

I also met Samantha Robinson, who makes the wonderful Watermelon Bowls.

I went to her studio last time I was in Sydney, but it was closed so it was great to be able to finally meet her.

She was very nice and I purchased one of her lovely pieces to bring home.

All in all it was a great event

Now the boys are back to school it's time to get back to work.

I have been itching to get stuck back into creating some new pieces.

This week I have been busy catching up on orders, including some from some new stockists... stay tuned for this.

I have also been getting organised for the In Style Trade Fair.

It has suddenly crept up, and so I am madly running around getting some last minute pieces made and order forms, catalogues printed etc.. etc..
